Oxford Mom to Start Power Soccer Team in Central Mass
The United States Power Soccer Association is proud to find volunteer in Central Mass
Oxford , MA, August 7, 2008 – Tammy Rayess, newest Power Soccer organizer for Central Massachusetts, is looking for potential athletes and volunteers for this great sport. Power Soccer is the fastest growing adaptive sport for power wheelchair users. This action packed team sport combines the skill of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair itself, to participate in an extremely challenging game very similar to soccer. Soccer without boundaries is now available to power wheelchair users in our area.
Rayess recently learned of this exciting sport and felt very strongly about bringing it to Central Mass. Rayess is a licensed Occupational Therapist with cerebral palsy, and uses a power chair for mobility. Her husband is an Engineer and has polio, walking with the aid of a brace. They have two beautiful daughters and feel strongly about teaching them that they too can do anything that they put their minds to. “We know how empowering this will be for all who are involved and we are personally committed to seeing this succeed.”
The United States Power Soccer Association ( USPSA) is the governing body for power soccer in the United States. There are currently 42 active teams in the US with over 25 new teams expected to be members in the 2008-2009 season. This is a competitive sport that combines strategy, power, speed and quick thinking. Participants also learn good sportsmanship, teamwork, strategy and improved mobility skills. More importantly are the social benefits of competitive sports: Inclusion, acceptance, empowerment!
A free Power Soccer clinic will be held August 23, 2008 to introduce this action-packed game to power chair users. The clinic will include an informational presentation with videos, skill testing, drills and even scrimmaging. This is open to all potential athletes, family members, interested volunteers and sponsors. Members from Team USA and Team France will be on hand for teaching as well as the USPSA East Coast Regional Director, Jerry Frick! This exciting event will be held at the Faith Baptist Church, 22 Faith Avenue, Auburn, MA from 10:00am until 4:00pm. Pre-registration is requested. To register, call (508) 987-8552. Lunch will be provided for athletes and staff. Potential athletes and volunteers will have the opportunity to sign up to be on the Central Mass Team. The season will begin in September and will practice on Sunday afternoons from 2-4pm.
