This has been an amazing snow year so far for us here in Southern California. I am sure you have seen just about every friend you know playing in the snow on your IG and Facebook feeds. And as much as you would like to, you might just have no idea where to go! Well, that’s what this post is for… options! So here are 12 places to go to play in the snow in Southern California.
From places to build snowmen, to sledding and tubing, or even get in some skiing or snowboarding, California has it all within a couple hours driving distance!
Best snow play for: LA./Inland Empire/North Orange County
Big Bear Lake
With an average snowfall of 67 inches, this is one of the places that will almost guarantee you a day of fun in the snow! It is also home to many snowboarders and skiiers. Most of the major resorts are great for the extreme snow sports, but not so ideal for playing. So, if you plan on bringing your own tubes/sled look for a good hill off the road. OR better yet, head over to Big Bear Snow Play where you rent equipment and the magic carpet does all the hard work so parents and kids alike can conserve their energy for the important stuff— PLAY! You might also opt to have a fun day at the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain. Year round fun for all!!!

Idyllwild
Skiing is not allowed in the San Jacinto mountain town, so this lessons the crowds just a bit. However, the adorable quaint town, and tons of outdoor areas will provide the snow filled fun you are looking for.
Running Springs
This is one of my personal favorite areas and it’s also home to one of Southern California’s oldest and largest snow tubing parks: Snowdrift. Snowdrift has fun for every level of tuber and is large and easy to make work if you are willing to pay. The Green Valley Lake Recreational Center is also a great place to check out and maybe even stay a night or two! There are some fun off the road areas to play as well. Just keep your eyes peeled.
Lake Arrowhead
Located in the San Bernardino Mountains Lake Arrowhead is a great place to check out the snow. Check out Lake Arrowhead Village, or one of my favorite places, Santa’s Village. Reserve and guarantee a spot to enjoy the snow beauty and fun in the mountains in a safe, quieter environment without worrying about the crowds. And be sure to check out Snow Valley in the area for a ton of fun too. Of course if you drive down the hwy, you will be sure to see many areas off the side of the road to play at.
Mt Baldy
Mt Baldy is a closer, easier drive than Big Bear and has a lot of great areas to play. They even have a tubing section at the resort at Mt Baldy Snow Tubing for those who want a sure thing and want to skip the driving and looking option, which can seem very intimidating to newbies. This includes the chair lift up and back plus 2 hours on the mountain.
Wrightwood
This website helps know what conditions are and gives a lot of great info. Some areas require an adventure pass (you can get a one time use, or a yearly pass- which is nice to use for hikes year round) this can be purchased many places, but specifically in Wrightwood at Mountain Hardware.— in fact go to Mountain Hardware as there are areas to play there as well. Wrightwood is also home to the very popular resort Mountain High for those looking to try skiing, or snowboarding. Make sure to have you adventure pass in this area if you are looking for snow play.

Palm Springs Aerial Tram
Take the 10 min aerial tramway up to the top of Mount San Jacinto’s wilderness. It’s so fun to go from desert to snow in that short amount of time. This is also a fun adventure, plus you can see snow late into the season! With tons of trails, museums, restaurants and more, this is something every Californian (and visitor) should take advantage of.
Mount Pinos Campground Area
In the LA area (off the 5 freeway north of Santa Clarita) there are a ton of places to play in the Frazier Park area!!! Head to the Chula Vista Campground, or a bit lower at the Mount Pinos Campground.
Unexpected fun: Joshua Tree gets snow during the winter and you get to enjoy the beautiful desert National Park in a whole new way! It may not be thick enough to build a snowman, but what a sight! And there is still a ton to do there!
Oak Glen is one of our favorite areas simply because there is no mountain driving and it is super easy to get to. We love the fresh hot cider donuts from Snowline Orchards and of course the hot apple cider. It doesn’t stay snowy there long so go only after a big snow storm and check out the field across from the Village area.
Lytle Creek may not be the best place for sledding, but it’s a great place and easy location for some off the road snow play!
Best snow play for: South O.C. and San Diego
Cuyamaca Rancho State Park
About 15 minutes south of Julian is this wonderful park (which does cost $10 to enter), but it’s the perfect place to play, check out trails, and enjoy the snow. There are also some free legal turn outs on your way in to stop and play.
Julian
Get some of their world famous apple pie and cocoa and enjoy this absolutely adorable mountain town. But again, this is home for many people so… be respectful!!!
Palomar Mountain State Park
Bring your own snow toys for some good ole’ fashion snowy day fun. You might want to check out the snowy trails, or enjoy a snowball fight. Whatever you do for the day, have fun. Maybe check out some of the campsites and make future plans in the summer. The Palomar Observatory might be a good destination to add to your itinerary for the day as well.
Laguna Mountain Lodge
It’s a little off the beaten path out near Anza Borrego, but this area gives tons of space to play, plus stay at the lodge and really enjoy all the area has to offer. This area is also the snowiest in all of San Diego County. The lodge is also pet friendly making it the perfect place for the WHOLE family.
Other places of interest: Bailey’s Palomar Resort. Open year round this place has been in operation since 1887.
Be sure to check weather and road requirements for any of these spots as you don’t want to go up disappointed from lack or snow, or perhaps too much that chains are required— although those might always be a good idea when driving up any mountain.
Be sure to check if your area snow play is open; hours and prices may vary. I know many are closed throughout the week. Also, be aware that if you choose to play in the mountains on a weekend after a snow storm you will sit in hours of traffic and have to fight crowds for parking. And most importantly: BE RESPECTFUL. Of others, of nature, of the communities that live there. Pick up ALL your trash, don’t park on private property, be courteous!!!
